What can dogs teach us?

Lessons we can learn from our dogs

How to avoid confrontation

Dogs way up the situation instantly and always choose the path of least resistance. Dogs look for the easiest way to run around obstacles rather than try to confront them.

Too often people tackle problems head on rather than trying to find a way around them. The default position for many people is confrontational. They try to impose their will, argue rather than compromise and refuse to accept they can’t have their way. Which all leads to stress and unhappiness, often over minor incidents that are not important.

Hello. Are you friendly? How to make friends

Dogs are keen to make friends. They quickly test to see if another dog is friendly or not, instead of waiting for ever for proof.

Many people are immediately wary when they first meet someone new. They are suspicious and afraid to let their guard down and be friendly. Therefore, it’s hardly surprising if the new person they have met is not friendly back to them. The result is a lack of communication which leads to misunderstanding and even hostility. It would be far better for everyone to try to be friendly and get to know someone first before making a judgement

How to show feelings

I am happy to see youDogs instinctively show they are pleased to see their friends by wagging their tails being alert and interested.

Here at Online Dog And Puppy Training we believe one of the best things about having a dog is the greetings our pets give us, even when we have only been away for a short time. But a  “happy to see you greeting” doesn’t just make us feel good it also helps form a special bond. If we could openly show our pleasure when we meet our friends and family, just think what that could do to for our relations with the people in our lives.

Be assertive

Be determined like a dog with a boneUnless their master or mistress or pack leader says otherwise, Dogs will not hesitate to act in what they believe is the appropriate manner.

Most people know what’s the right and wrong way to act in 99% of situations but somehow many of us have lost the ability to respond naturally. We over analyse everything. We are worried we may be thought of as old fashioned and out of touch. We have become fearful of upsetting someone or some particular group and fail to stand up for ourselves.

be determined

Dogs do not give up without a very good reason.

How much more productive and successful would we be if we had tenacity, focus and utter faith in our abilities. Unfortunately it takes very little to distract or discourage the majority of people these days.

Dogs showing their joy of being alive even in harsh conditionsBe grateful for being alive

Dogs wag their tails in the most appalling of circumstances in return for a pat or a kind word.

Being grateful for what we have is so preferable to whining about what we don’t have. Most people have plenty to be thankful for and if we could take joy from the blessings we have instead of concentrating on  the problems in our lives we would be so much happier.

The main lesson out dogs have for us

Be happy, enjoy this moment and be glad to be alive!

Show the world you are happy

The Leader of the Pack

The most frequent question people ask about dog training is “what should I do to become the leader of the pack?” It is easily the most important question as you have to ensure that your dog, or dogs, understand that you are the pack leader and the person who calls the shots. The leader of the pack is the decision maker – you decide when to go for a walk, you decide what is acceptable behaviour in every circumstance and you decide how to respond to the various situations and events that may occur.

You must know and understand how dog packs work. It is vital that you appreciate the importance of being the leader of the pack and that you must make all the decisions. If you allow your dog to do his own thing, there is a very real possibility that your dog will, sooner rather than later, get something horribly wrong and make a serious mistake!

To understand what it means and how to become the leader of the pack you have to realize that there are certain things that your dog couldn’t care less about.

What make of car you own, how big and expensive your house is, how much money you earn or how important your job is! Your dog just doesn’t care about such things but if you have a treat in your hand that would be VERY interesting!

Getting your dog to sit on command falls a long way short of what you must do to become the leader of the pack. Walking to heel is important when your dog is on the lead but controlling your dog when they are off the lead is much more important.

However, bullying your dog is definitely not the way to become the leader of the pack in fact this can back fire very badly as you are teaching your dog that physical strength is what gives you power. You may force your dog to submit to you with physical strength but this will not make your dog believe that you deserve respect. Dominating your dog will not convince them that you should become the leader of the pack. It will just make them fear you as a bully and may even make them try to dominate you!

So, what should you do to become the leader of the pack? Every dog all over the world, irrespective of size or breed uses identical methods of establishing the leader of the pack. The easiest way to understand how this works is to watch it being done on video. Doggy Dan has the most comprehensive video based web site (over 100 high quality videos online) on dog and puppy training in the world (Click Here! to visit Dan’s website). In these superb online videos Dan reveals the areas in which it is vital to take control of your dog. They include the following:

* The leader of the pack must be calm and in total control when your dog alerts you to danger by barking. This will include everything that your dog perceives to be dangerous and barks at in and around your home and property.
* When walking on the lead your dog should not tug or pull you at any stage, even at the beginning! Learning to walk your dog correctly can only be really taught properly via video!
* If you are the leader of the pack then your dog will be able to switch off and relax completely when it is in the home. If your dog is alert most of the time when at home and can’t unwind and relax then it’s because your dog is on pack leader sentry duty!
* Getting your dog to relax and switch off is directly influenced by how you greet your dog when you return home. When you watch this on video you will see that it is very subtle but it is the difference between being the leader of the pack or just a follower.
* Finally, giving your dog their food in the correct manner will establish who is the leader of the pack and there is far more to it than simply asking your dog to sit! If you have a dog that is “not motivated by food” then you could be in for a big surprise!
